One of the top destinations on my bucket list has been to visit the beautiful state of California and drive the Pacific Coast Highway, taking in all the amazing sights. And this week, my dream has come through as Chris and I be taking a short but packed journey through Cali.
As I write this, we are in a hotel in San Diego, getting ready to head out to pick up our car and start the drive, but let me tell you what we’ve been up to so far.
Friday morning, dark and early I left Barbados for Miami. Any time I have to transit through Miami I try and take advantage of the opportunity and spend some time with my sisters. It was an awesome transit day as Savannah picked me up from the airport and we immediately headed to Miracle Mile where we chose to try a restaurant who was participating in the Miami Spice programme. Anyone travelling through Miami in the next month should really try it out as you get to try out food at pretty high-end restaurant for a set 2-course and 3-course menu that is significantly cheaper than the meals on the menu.
We ended up a place called Bulla (pronounced Buh-yah for all you judgmental Bajans lol) and the food was fantastic. From there we hit the spa and had mani/pedis, always a must on a girls day. And then onto the mall for some quick make-up shopping. Followed by an amazing tutorial by Lils, which had us all in stitches of laughter!
For dinner we ended up in Wynwood, at the Asian Food Hall called 1-800-Lucky, The ramen was divine, so I was a very happy camper. We took a stroll through Wynwood (one of my fav placed in Miami) and ended up at an ice-cream place called Crack and Dasher. To say this place served unique flavours is an understatement. That Campfire flavour… not s’mores but actual smoked wood, and Back to School… peanut butter and jelly with Goldfish in it, Sweet Basil.. closer to pasta sauce than anything sweet. Each flavour was more bizarre than the last, we left the store scratching our heads in wonder!
It was an early night for me, and a much earlier morning as I had to be at the airport for 4:00am for my first flight to Dallas, and then onto San Diego. Arrived in San Diego around 11, where I met Chris (who was out here already for a conference) and dropped my stuff at our hotel in Little Italy called Porto Vista and headed out to explore the town. They have an amazing new transport option now in SD (and I am hoping in all the other Cali cities we plan to visit this week) where you can pick up motorized scooters (like the old school Razor scooter) and travel around the city. Once your done with it, you can leave it basically anywhere and someone else can pick it up and use it. It is an awesome way to see a bunch of stuff in a short period of time.
We found a Farmer’s Market, had lunch at the Little Italy Food Hall, scooted around the harbour/port area, strolled around the Seaport Village, scooted through the Gaslamp Quarter before heading back to the hotel. Dinner was at a little Italian place and then an early night as I was wiped out from the travel and the time difference.
Our itinerary today is to head up the coast, ending in Venice Beach where we have an AirBNB rented for the night. Lots of miles ahead of us. but I cannot wait! 🙂
